About the Author
Ralph E. Hanson is a professor in the communication department at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, where he teaches courses in writing, blogging, reporting, and mass communication. Previously, he was on the faculty at West Virginia University and Northern Arizona University. He has been teaching introduction to mass communication at least 20 years, and he has worked extensively on developing online courses and degree programs. Hanson has a bachelor’s degree in journalism and anthropology from Iowa State University, a master’s degree in journalism from Iowa State, and a doctorate in sociology from Arizona State University. He is currently working on research about the connection between sports boycotts and civil rights legislation. When Ralph is not out on his motorcycle riding to places a long ways from Nebraska, he is blogging on mass communication issues at http://ralphehanson.com. He tweets as @ralphehanson.

Great textbook. Very thorough. Has interactive sections, website link for additional readings, and overall it does a great job applying themes you learn early on throughout the rest of the book. I can't guarantee your class will be fun, but I can guarantee you won't mind studying from this book.
As a Comm. Textbook, it really does give you insight into the history and modern state of Media. My Professor chose this book, and I completely trust his judgement, as my Professor, Michael Korolenko, is highly experienced in Media, and the book itself, is through, just as he is.
I purchased his book for a college class, and am really enjoying it. It’s a good read and didn’t read like a regular textbook, there’s lots of color, supplementing articles, and you can hear the authors voice in the writing.

I bought the book for my journalism class, and it was very inexpensive and in great condition.
Very up to date (with its January 2014 publication date) this book does indeed read like something you might read anyway in your liesure time in you were interested in Mass Media. The author's style is easy to read, thorough, and humorous without going overboard. The chapters read like incisive magazine article about their topics.The extras and sidebars are always fascinating as well. His suggestions have had me scrambling to websites to check things out or do further research. I am taking this course right now and i never dread the chapter reading assignments with this textbook. Thanks
